Extremely rare pottery from First Temple-era bears even rarer inscription, Israeli researchers discover - Archaeology - Haaretz.com

The text on the back of "Ostracon 16," found when the team photographer took an advanced-technology picture of the book of the sherd of pottery. The researchers deciphered 50 letters in 17 words on the ostracon’s rear. Until now, they had thought the back of the sherd, also known as Ostracon 16 and kept at the Israel Museum for the last 50 years, was blank. Then, the team photographer, Michael, took an advanced-technology picture of that rear side, thinking he might be seeing something there, explains Tel Aviv University team member Dr. Barak Sober – and there was. Fresh analysis of Ostracon 16 found four previously unknown lines on its front – where the writing is fairly clear after around 2,600 years – and three on its back. The writing on the rear seems to simply be a continuation of a letter from Hananyahu to his friend, a Judahite quartermaster named Elyashiv Ben Oshiyahu quartered at the Arad Fortress, asking for an issue of wine and food from the reserves at the Arad fortress for one of the army units, says team member Dr. Arie Shaus. The pottery bit also mentions a messenger by the name of Ga’alyahu, who was sent to Arad with the wine delivery. The ancient Judahite citadel uncovered at Tel Arad in the inland Negev, 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) from the modern city of Arad, provided a wealth of artifacts from the kingdom’s late days. Among the things found there about 50 years ago were 91 ostraca – fragments of pottery with ink writing on them, in paleo-Hebrew. The text on the back of "Ostracon 16," found when the team photographer took an advanced-technology picture of the book of the sherd of pottery.Michael Cordonsky/Tel Aviv University Of these ostraca, over a dozen were orders to the Judahite quartermaster Elyashiv, says Sober. It is the reanalysis of one of these that caused the sensation this week. The ostraca aren’t biblical or poetical writings; they are orders to the quartermaster, commands, lists of names, and so on. “All the ostraca in the ‘Elyashiv archive’ were found in the same room on the floor,” says Sober. “All were addressed to Elyashiv, starting ‘To Elyashiv’ – deliver this or that amount of wine or flour, and so on. One ostracon doesn’t address him but mentions him.” Actually, even before writing was noticed on its back, the Elyashiv Ostraca was an anomaly. The other ostraca are orders, pure and simple. This one looks like a personal letter from his good friend Hananyahu (or possibly peer quartermaster, former school buddy, who knows?), says Sober. “We don’t know how many of the ostraca Hananyahu wrote. Most of the letters to Elyashiv look like orders, but this was different,” says Sober. For one, it didn’t read like military barking, he explains. “It uses a phrase that could mean ‘Your friend,’ ‘Dear friend,’ maybe even ‘Beloved.’ Clearly, this is not an order, it’s something personal.” The mysterious Hananyahu may well have lived in Be’er Sheva, another Judahite regional hub, says Shaus. Another conclusion from the collection of ostraca is that literacy was widespread among the rank and file of the Judahites in the First Temple era. That had not been assumed until recently, but the writings discovered were not scribes carving tablets to appease kingly egos, but soldiers corresponding with each other. Sober, for one, says he feels the argument over literacy at the time is over. The archaeological site at Tel Arad, southern Israel. Eliyahu Hershkovitz Who controlled the Judahite fortress at Tel Arad at the time, around 600 B.C.E., is not known, nor who was king of Judah. There has been some argument over dating the finds at the site, say Shaus and Sober.

A Breakdown Of Crucial Aspects For How Can I Book Online Tatkal Ticket

why has online bookselling been so successful

Online shopping has its good points and its bad points, like anything else you do. In order to reap the benefits and avoid the negatives, you ought to find out all you can about shopping online. Keep reading to discover what you need to know about online shopping.

Double-checking your anti-virus protection to ensure it's fully updated is a smart thing to do before you start shopping online. Suspect sites have included many online retailers. There are people who establish stores just for the purpose of spreading malware infections. Be cautious whenever you visit an online store, even ones that have good reputations.

Don't give out your SSN when shopping online. No site needs such information in order to sell you something. If you notice that a site is asking for a Social Security number, the site probably isn't legitimate. If this happens, do not give out the information and find a different, reputable site.

Before purchasing from any online store or seller, check customer ratings and reviews. Just know that you should use these reviews so you can figure out what kinds of things you're going to experience by buying from this person. If the seller has consistent low ratings, keep away.

Be sure that all of the information about a product is read prior to making any decisions. You can be fooled by online photos of products. The photo may make the product seem smaller or larger than it actually is. Reading the description will allow you to be confident in the item you are purchasing.

Register on any store you want to buy from. This makes checking out much easier, but also provides cost savings. Set your preferences up so that you get emails related to special deals ahead of people who are not registered. You can also view your past purchases and actively track current orders.

Review product pages for items that interest you. Check the specific details and the item's size to ensure you get what you really want. Keep in mind that the picture used on the product page might not correspond exactly to the product you are buying.

Any time you plan to make a purchase online, double-check your order before you submit it. The design of certain pages can make it tough to specify precisely what you want. Therefore, you should carefully examine all the items you have at the checkout so that you can ensure you are purchasing exactly what you want.

Online retailers, just as brick and mortar retailers, use holiday times to promote their products and run sales. Certain holidays will make sites have a lot of sales in regular stores, but online stores are participating most of the time as well. While some sites have sales on holidays, others will ship items for free. There are even stores that will offer both.

Take password creation very seriously. Avoid using simple passwords. You have your credit card information on those shopping sites! Make it difficult for online crooks to hack your information. Use random passwords with letters, numbers and symbols where possible.

Peruse sites that offer daily deals. You can find good discounts and coupons there. Sadly, not all are truly as good as they appear. Read through the deal details with a fine tooth comb, in particular with regards to the seller's reputation, the shipping you will pay and any other restrictions.

Sometimes the best option is to do business only with online retailers based in your own country. When you shop with these merchants, you are protected by federal and state consumer protection laws. If you buy outside the United States, you do not get the same levels of protection.

The season's end is a great time to pick up on bargains and clearance items. Much the same way as conventional stores try to clear out old merchandise, online stores want to accomplish the same goal. Thus the prices will be reduced drastically.

When you shop online your credit card details should be treated with care. You should only shop at websites that establish a secure connection with you. Look for a little padlock on the site to make sure it's secure. You can find this on the right corner of the URL bar in your browser.

With your new base of knowledge, you should be ready to get the ball rolling and realize big savings. Just use the tips you've just read. By making smart use of your savings you can greatly improve your life.
